Many years ago, the carvers of the Northwest coast created masks that were inspired by the people and events of the times. During his journey as an artist, David discovered long-forgotten masks in public collections, such as a starvation mask, portrait mask of a chief’s daughter, portrait of a ship captain, and many others. This inspired him to create masks based on the people and historic events of our time.
David
says about his work: tradition is a foundation to build upon and not a boundary
to restrain creativity.

was given a wonderful Christmas gift, a silk scarf by my grandmother Ellen
Neel. It is from about 1960, at a time when Northwest coast Native fabric art
